The Engineering Sr. Manager (M3) leads multiple engineering teams, managers, and supervisors within a specialized discipline, accountable for setting direction, deploying resources, and ensuring technical excellence across complex, cross‑functional initiatives. This role develops and executes engineering strategies aligned with McKesson’s long‑term IT vision, overseeing planning, prioritization, and delivery of engineering roadmaps and major programs. It drives innovation, standardization, and adoption of best‑practice engineering methodologies while ensuring compliance with organizational policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. 

The Sr. Manager serves as a senior technical advisor to executive leadership, influencing technology decisions and shaping architectural and engineering approaches that advance enterprise capabilities. It builds strong relationships with business leaders, IT partners, and vendors to ensure end‑to‑end delivery integration. With accountability for budgets, forecasting, workforce planning, and talent development, the Engineering Sr. Manager fosters a culture of continuous learning, inclusion, and high performance while strengthening engineering maturity across the organization. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development and execution of engineering strategies, ensuring alignment with business objectives and enterprise technology direction. 

  • Oversee planning and delivery of complex, cross‑functional engineering projects, validating progress, quality, standards adherence, and risk mitigation. 

  • Establish engineering governance structures, enforce compliance requirements, and lead audits, assessments, and continuous‑improvement initiatives. 

  • Direct managers in translating strategy into operational engineering plans, resource allocations, and measurable performance goals. 

  • Drive innovation by adopting emerging technologies, optimizing engineering workflows, and improving technical capabilities across teams. 

  • Provide subject‑matter leadership on critical issues, guiding troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and long‑term remediation plans. 

  • Evaluate engineering investments, optimize technology spend, and strengthen vendor partnerships to maximize business value. 

  • Oversee department budgets, forecasts, financial targets, and major engineering contracts or procurements. 

  • Lead workforce planning, organizational design, succession planning, and engineering talent development. 

  • Serve as a thought leader, representing engineering in executive and cross‑functional forums, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation. 

Minimum Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • Intermediate‑to‑advanced knowledge of engineering practices, system design, architecture patterns, and modern development frameworks. 

  • Strong understanding of engineering governance, compliance standards, cybersecurity expectations, and regulatory requirements. 

  • Proficiency in evaluating complex engineering solutions, technology roadmaps, integration patterns, and modernization strategies. 

  • Ability to lead cross‑functional engineering programs and consult as a technical advisor to managers, architects, and senior leaders. 

  • Advanced communication and storytelling skills for executive‑level technical reporting, insights, and strategic recommendations. 

  • Leadership capability in managing managers, developing engineering talent, and elevating technical craftsmanship. 

  • Strategic decision‑making and risk‑assessment skills to guide engineering direction, innovation, and transformation initiatives. 

  • Financial acumen to oversee engineering budgets, investments, forecasts, and vendor contracts. 

  • Behavioral proficiency at Sr. Manager level: Change Advocate, Customer & Business Driven, Collaboration & Partnership, Decision Making, Influencing Others, Innovative Thinking, Oral & Written Communication, Servant Leadership, Strategic Thinking. 

  • Ability to drive organizational learning, continuous improvement, and long‑term engineering maturity. 

Critical Experience (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • Azure Data Platform Mastery - Deep expertise across Azure services (Data Factory, Synapse, ADLS, Event Hubs, Cosmos DB, etc.)

  • Databricks & Lakehouse Engineering - proficiency in Databricks (Delta Lake, MLflow, streaming/batch unification)

  • Modern Data Architecture (Structured + Unstructured)

  • Distributed Data Processing & Engineering Languages - Hands-on expertise in Python, Scala, SQL, and Spark-based processing, combined with infrastructure-as-code practices to drive scalable, automated pipelines.

  • Enterprise Data Product & Semantic Layer Engineering

Business Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; typically 9+ years in engineering, architecture, or technical leadership with 1+ years of supervisory or management responsibility. 

  • Experience leading multi‑team engineering functions, delivering complex technical programs, and managing enterprise‑scale initiatives. 

  • Exposure to regulated environments, engineering governance structures, and executive‑level technology decision‑making. 

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders, manage budgets, and drive measurable engineering and operational outcomes.

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations.In addition to base pay, other compensation, such as an annual bonus or long-term incentive opportunities may be offered.
