Director, Private Label Product Management
Location: Richmond, VA, USA - 9954 Mayland Drive - hybrid-2-3 times in office. No remote offered currently. May consider those outside of Richmond, but, relocation currently not offered

Position Overview:
The Director, Medical Surgical Brands Product Management is responsible for leading the development and execution of the commercial, product, and portfolio strategy across assigned categories while providing leadership, coaching, and direction to a team of Product Development Managers. This role combines direct category ownership with responsibility for ensuring the successful execution of the broader McKesson Brands product development pipeline.
This individual will foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and execution excellence while partnering closely with leaders across Sourcing, Quality Assurance, Brand Management, Supply Chain, Product Marketing, Sales, Finance, Legal, Regulatory, and external supplier partners.
The Director is accountable for coaching and developing talent, establishing clear performance expectations, portfolio priorities, and ensuring projects are delivered on time and in accordance with quality, compliance, customer, and financial objectives
Key Responsibilities:
Product Ownership & Strategic Leadership
Act as the executive owner and "business leader" for assigned strategic product categories, developing and executing commercial, portfolio, and innovation strategies that drive sustainable growth and profitability.
Serve as the product leader for assigned product portfolios, providing strategic recommendations regarding portfolio expansion, rationalization, innovation investments, and long-term growth opportunities.
Develop and maintain multi-year product roadmaps aligning with category growth forecasts that balance innovation, lifecycle management, profitability, and customer value.
Provide strategic leadership and recommendations regarding product assortment, revenue growth, profitability, portfolio performance and product enhancement and positioning opportunities, ensuring alignment with company financial and strategic objectives.
Lead Voice of Customer activities to identify emerging customer needs, market trends, and competitive opportunities that support long-term growth.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Lead, coach, and develop a team of Product Development Managers responsible for product management, product development and commercialization activities.
Manage clear objectives, performance expectations, and accountability measures aligned with departmental and organizational goals.
Create an environment that promotes ownership, innovation, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration.
Provide coaching and mentorship to enhance business acumen, strategic thinking, project leadership, and stakeholder management capabilities.
Champion a culture of accountability, “ownership”, and execution excellence while driving continuous improvement of product management and product development capabilities, processes, governance standards, and best practices across the organization.
Product Development & Commercialization Excellence
Provide leadership and oversight for new product development initiatives from concept through commercialization, ensuring successful execution against scope, timelines, quality standards, and financial objectives.
Ensure rigorous business case development and evaluation processes are consistently applied across the organization.
Provide leadership and cross-functional direction for product validation, evidence generation, and product claims strategies to support regulatory requirements, product differentiation, customer adoption, and commercial success.
Ensure customer insights, competitive intelligence, and market requirements are effectively translated into product requirements / specifications, value propositions, and commercialization plans.
Partner with Product Marketing and Sales leadership to influence go-to-market strategies, product positioning, value-proposition communication, and launch effectiveness
Portfolio & Pipeline Governance
Lead and drive project performance, key milestones, risks, and dependencies across the product development portfolio.
Lead portfolio expansion & portfolio optimization efforts, including new product introductions, product enhancements, lifecycle management, and rationalization initiatives based on customer value, strategic alignment, profitability, and market opportunity
Cross-Functional Leadership
Partner with leaders across Sourcing, Quality Assurance, Brand Management, Product Marketing, Sales, Finance, Supply Chain, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, and Operations to ensure alignment and successful execution of business priorities.
Influence and align stakeholders across a highly matrixed environment to drive efficient decision-making and execution.
Collaborate with sourcing teams to support strategic supplier selection, product transitions, and supplier innovation initiatives.
Build and maintain executive-level relationships with key supplier partners to advance innovation and business objectives.
Partner with Product Marketing, Sales, and Finance to influence product positioning, profitability and growth strategies that strengthen competitive advantage and customer value.
Partner and influence commercial decision-making through data-driven analysis of new and existing products, market trends, competitive dynamics, category performance, and customer needs.
Minimum Requirements
Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 12+ years of professional experience and 4+ years of management experience.
Critical Qualifications:
Demonstrated success leading product development initiatives in finished goods from concept development through commercialization and lifecycle management; healthcare, medical device, or regulated product experience preferred.
Demonstrated experience owning product category strategy, product lifecycle management and revenue growth objectives within a product management, category management or product development environment.
Proven ability to lead and develop teams, establish clear accountability, and drive execution against individual and organizational objectives.
Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate business objectives, customer insights, and market opportunities into actionable product and portfolio strategies.
Experience managing product portfolios, development pipelines, and competing priorities across multiple initiatives and stakeholders.
Customer-centric mindset with a proven ability to identify unmet customer needs and translate insights into commercially successful product solutions.
Strong executive presence and influencing skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across all levels of the organization and drive alignment among diverse stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to balance strategic leadership with operational execution in a fast-paced, highly matrixed environment.
Strong financial and business acumen, including experience evaluating investments, developing business cases, and managing profitability and growth objectives.
Working knowledge of supply chain operations, sourcing strategies, and supplier relationship management.
Understanding of quality systems, regulatory requirements, and product development processes within a regulated industry.
Proven ability to manage organizational change, remove obstacles, and drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance team effectiveness and business results.
Ability to work in an ambiguous environment with ongoing change
Additional Skills and Qualifications
Deep understanding of healthcare markets, customer segments, competitive dynamics, and industry trends.
Experience implementing portfolio governance, stage-gate processes, and product development best practices.
Exceptional project and program management skills with the ability to oversee multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to leverage data to drive decisions and business outcomes.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, including financial modeling, business case development, and executive-level presentations. Future state - google platform experience
Experience utilizing data analytics, digital tools, and AI-enabled technologies to improve productivity, decision-making, and organizational effectiveness.
Education
BA / BS in business, marketing, engineering or related field required; MBA would be considered an asset
Formal training or certifications in Product Management, Project Management, Innovation Management, or related disciplines (preferred).
Additional Information

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations.
