Uncharted Paths: Dr. Ram Cheruvu

From pharmacy to leadership development, Dr. Ram Cheruvu’s career path at McKesson is anything but conventional. After spending over a decade in the pharmacy world, including four years as a pharmacy manager at McKesson, Ram made a bold pivot into a role focused on developing high-potential leaders across the enterprise. In this edition of Uncharted Paths, we explore how curiosity, courage, and culture helped shape his journey.

What sparked your transition from pharmacy to leadership development?

Ram: I was browsing our internal open roles, and saw a posting for Manager of Executive and High Potential Development. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I’ve always been passionate about leadership and self-development, so I reached out to the team, asked for a stretch assignment, and got to know their work. Eventually, the role reopened—and I applied immediately. As fate would have it, the hiring manager came into the pharmacy that week, and I gave her my elevator pitch right then and there! 

What was the biggest challenge in making that pivot?

Ram: It was a huge risk. I agonized over the decision for weeks. I asked myself: is this a one-way door or a two-way door? Meaning, could I return to pharmacy if it didn’t work out? Realizing I could always come back gave me the confidence to take the leap. I kept my license active and embraced the opportunity to learn a new skill set from the ground up.


How has McKesson supported your career development?

Ram: McKesson truly encourages out-of-the-box thinking. I’ve never had a manager or mentor upset with me for exploring new opportunities—only for not telling them sooner! We have incredible resources like career development templates, self-assessments, and learning platforms with thousands of courses. The support here is real, and it’s tailored to meet you wherever you are on your journey.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

Ram: The McKesson Experience onboarding program is hands-down the most fun project I’ve worked on. I get to connect with new employees and share our culture. I also love facilitating high-potential programs and having fireside chats with leaders across the enterprise. Helping others grow as leaders is deeply fulfilling.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career change?

Ram: Ask yourself three things: Is this a one-way or two-way door? Will I learn and grow in this new role? Can I make a broader impact? These questions helped me frame my decision. If the answers point toward growth and purpose, it might be time to take that leap.

Do you feel a sense of purpose and belonging at McKesson?

Ram: Absolutely. The culture here is strong and supportive. I often hear from new employees that they didn’t realize how negative their previous workplaces were until they came here. The talent is incredible, and I get to learn from people who are smarter than me every day—which is all I could ask for.
