About the Organization
This role is part of McKesson’s Ontada technology division, which develops innovative technology and data solutions for oncology care. The iKnowMed G2 platform is a cornerstone of our provider technology portfolio and all supporting applications including ontadahealth portal, Mobile, practice Insights, Clinical Content mgmt. and Value Based Care measures enabling community oncology practices to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. As Lead Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to provide architecture advancing a platform that directly impacts patient outcomes and the future of oncology healthcare.
Position Summary
The Lead Software Engineer provides technical leadership and architecture guidance across multiple software engineering teams responsible for McKesson’s iKnowMed G2 platform, including Ontada Health Portal, Practice Insights, Clinical Content Mgmt, and Value-Based Care solutions that support thousands of clinicians across the United States in delivering cancer care. Operating in a highly regulated healthcare environment, this role designs and architects next-generation products, frameworks, and cloud-native platforms built on modern microservices architectures leveraging Java, Databricks, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, APIs, and event-driven integration patterns. The Lead Software Engineer owns and drives solution and platform architecture for secure, scalable, reliable, and high-performing systems, including API-led connectivity, cloud-native integrations, and data exchange across Ontada products with familiarity in healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7/FHIR and SMART on FHIR considered a plus.
Partnering closely with Senior Technology Managers, Technology Directors, Product Management, and cross-functional stakeholders, to develop the technology strategy based on business objectives while championing innovation, engineering excellence, and operational scalability. The Lead Software Engineer remains deeply engaged in developing the POCs, technical problem-solving, establishes and drives architectural standards, influences technology decisions across initiatives, and helps advance intelligent product experiences through AI/ML, NLP, LLM-enabled workflows, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) patterns, evaluation, and governance capabilities. Success in this role is measured by the adoption of architectural standards, the reliability and scalability of the platforms and integration ecosystem delivered, and the ability to influence outcomes and elevate engineering excellence across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture Leadership: Define and drive the technology vision, architecture strategy, and modernization roadmap for enterprise platforms, leveraging cloud-native architectures, microservices, APIs, event-driven systems, and platform engineering practices.
Solution Design & Governance: Lead architecture reviews, establish technology standards, and ensure solutions align with enterprise principles for scalability, security, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
Cloud & Platform Modernization: Drive adoption of modern cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP), containerization, Kubernetes, DevSecOps, and infrastructure-as-code to improve platform agility and operational excellence.
Enterprise Integration: Architect secure and scalable integration solutions using REST APIs, messaging platforms, event-driven architectures, service buses, and healthcare interoperability standards where applicable.
Technology Strategy & Roadmaps: Develop multi-year architecture roadmaps, evaluate emerging technologies, and guide investment decisions that align business objectives with long-term technology strategy.
Technical Leadership: Provide architectural guidance across engineering teams, and foster engineering excellence through design reviews, best practices, and technical governance.
Innovation & Emerging Technologies: Champion innovation through adoption of AI/GenAI, advanced analytics, automation, and modern engineering practices to accelerate business value and platform transformation.
Operational Excellence: Promote reliability, security, performance optimization, and continuous improvement through architecture best practices and operational governance.
Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with engineering, product, security, and business leaders to align technology solutions with organizational priorities and communicate architectural decisions to executive stakeholders.
Technology Management: Evaluate technology platforms, cloud services, and strategic vendor partnerships to maximize business value, scalability, and operational efficiency.
Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure architecture solutions meet regulatory, security, privacy, and compliance requirements, including healthcare standards and enterprise governance frameworks.
Organizational Impact: Influence enterprise technology direction, drive digital transformation initiatives, and deliver measurable outcomes through scalable, secure, and innovative technology solutions.
Drive AI adoption by delivering scalable LLM, NLP, and RAG solutions that accelerate business outcomes.
Establish secure, compliant, and reliable AI operations through MLOps/LLMOps and responsible AI practices.
Minimum Requirement
Degree or equivalent and typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience. Less years required if has relevant Master’s or Doctorate qualifications.
Critical Skills
10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years of architecture and technical leadership across complex, distributed systems.
Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, cloud-native architecture, and large-scale enterprise platforms.
Strong experience with REST APIs, API gateways, event-driven architectures, Kafka, messaging, and enterprise integration patterns.
Hands-on expertise in Azure, AWS, or GCP, including Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and resiliency patterns.
Proven track record designing and operating secure, scalable, highly available, multi-tenant applications with strong focus on performance, reliability, and operational excellence.
Experience with DevSecOps, CI/CD, test automation, architecture governance, and engineering best practices.
Strong knowledge of relational databases, caching, search technologies, and analytics platforms.
Ability to lead architecture decisions, mentor engineering teams, and influence stakeholders through clear communication and technical leadership.
Familiarity with AI/GenAI technologies including LLMs, Prompt Engineering, and RAG architectures.
Knowledge of security, compliance, and regulated environments; healthcare interoperability (FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR) is a plus.
Drive AI adoption by delivering scalable LLM, NLP, and RAG solutions that accelerate business outcomes.
Establish secure, compliant, and reliable AI operations through MLOps/LLMOps and responsible AI practices.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced Credentials: Master’s degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering).
Healthcare & Enterprise Experience: Prior experience leading technology teams in healthcare IT, clinical software, or other highly regulated environments is strongly preferred. Experience modernizing legacy enterprise systems (e.g., monolith-to-microservices transformation, cloud migration) is a plus.
Additional Skills
Strong awareness of emerging trends in software engineering and cloud technologies, demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and technical excellence.
Experience managing relationships with third-party vendors and partners.
This position offers the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement based on recent updates to our in-office/work‑from‑home model. If located in DFW area, the selected candidate may be expected to work on‑site at our Las Colinas office a minimum of two (2) days per week, with the remaining days worked remotely. Specific in‑office days may be designated according to team needs and business priorities.
