Position Summary (Purpose of job):

The Data Architect – Level 3 plays a critical role in advancing secure, scalable, and compliant data architecture across McKesson’s healthcare technology ecosystem. This position is responsible for applying domain-specific architecture principles to design data models, integration patterns, and governance controls that align with enterprise standards and business priorities. Operating within a regulated environment, the Architect ensures that data solutions meet compliance requirements while enabling analytics, interoperability, and operational efficiency.

This role contributes to the definition of reference models, cloud-native patterns, and reusable assets that accelerate delivery. It involves scoping architecture needs, documenting future-state designs, and collaborating across functions to drive adoption and measurable impact. The Architect provides subject matter expertise in data architecture deliveryandparticipates in architecture reviews.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Translate requirements into data architecture designs define conceptual and logical models, outline integration patterns, apply security controls, and address review feedback to ensure outputs are actionable.
  • Develop and enforce governance practices operationalize metadata, lineage, quality rules, and access policies aligned with compliance requirements.
  • Design and optimize cloud‑native and hybrid data platforms contribute patterns for data lakes, warehouses, and streaming pipelines with cost, performance, and reliability objectives.
  • Prepare and maintain architecture artifacts produce reference models, standards, and diagrams with traceability to enterprise architecture directives.
  • Participate in project planning and execution provide prioritization guidance, include appropriate stakeholders, coordinate with external partners and vendors, and contribute change‑impact inputs and materials.
  • Investigate, resolve, and escalate problems maintain visibility to governance processes so issues are addressed with minimal impact to solution success.
  • Support solution design map processes, co‑design prototypes, and coordinate with engineering and analytics for review and approval of data designs and code with a focus on usability and adoption.
  • Evaluate technologies and patterns participate in vendor assessments and proof‑of‑concepts, benchmark options, and recommend selections aligned to domain needs.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement capture lessons learned and update reference artifacts to improve reusability and time‑to‑value.

Minimum Job Qualifications(Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):

  • Knowledge of Data Architecture, Data Governance, and Cloud-Native Architecture with the ability to apply standards in project delivery.
  • Working knowledge of Zero Trust Architecture and secure-by-design data patterns (encryption, IAM, network segmentation).
  • Proficiency in conceptual and logical datamodeling, schema design, and selection ofmodelingapproaches (e.g., star/snowflake, Data Vault).
  • Developing-to-proficient skills in data integration/ETL-ELT, orchestration, and lineage/metadata practices.
  • Familiarity with Security Architecture Design, Network Architecture, and compliance considerations for regulated data.
  • Understanding of Cloud Governance and cost/performance optimization for data platforms (storage tiers, workload sizing).
  • Ability to create clear architecture artifacts (standards, patterns, diagrams) and present to mixed technical/business audiences.
  • Competence in Problem Solving, Customer & Business Driven thinking, Building Relationships, Adaptability, Digital Acumen, and Creativity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including facilitation of design reviews and preparation of decision materials.

Business Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or Mathematics/Statistics with a strong data focus.
  • Typically requires4+years of relevant professional experience in data architecture, data engineering, or closely related roles, or relevant industry work experience.
  • Experience operating within regulated environments, applying data governance and compliance practices to architecture delivery.

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations.In addition to base pay, other compensation, such as an annual bonus or long-term incentive opportunities may be offered.
