Job Title: Lead Data Scientist, Operations Research

Summary

The Lead Data Scientist, Operations Research is responsible for architecting and implementing advanced AI/ML and Operations Research solutions that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of McKesson’s enterprise supply chain. As part of the Supply Chain & Operations Research Center of Excellence (COE), this role leads strategic initiatives focused on inventory optimization, working capital management, and next‑generation decision intelligence.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect, lead, and implement AI/ML‑driven Operations Research frameworks to optimize enterprise inventory management systems
  • Develop stochastic and statistical models to drive next‑best actions across the supply chain
  • Lead the design and development of an enterprise‑scale digital twin for inventory optimization
  • Develop inventory optimization and multi‑echelon simulation frameworks for supply chain decisioning
  • Lead development of statistical simulation and decision science frameworks
  • Build AI/ML‑driven continuous monitoring systems to dynamically assess network health and identify working capital opportunities
  • Play a leading role in applying Reinforcement Learning to dynamic pricing and safety stock optimization
  • Translate complex analytical insights into clear, actionable recommendations for both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • Mentor and guide junior and developing data science and analytics resources
  • Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements, drive adoption, and measure business impact of analytical solutions
  • Support cultivation of analytics‑driven business development opportunities
  • Assist in developing and maintaining strong, long‑term stakeholder relationships across Supply Chain and Operations

What You Bring

  • Deep expertise in statistical modeling, optimization, and Operations Research techniques applied to enterprise‑scale problems
  • Demonstrated experience solving complex inventory optimization and/or transportation optimization problems
  • Strong ability to architect end‑to‑end analytical solutions across the full data lifecycle, from data wrangling to enterprise‑scale consumption
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non‑technical audiences
  • Strong foundation in machine learning and data science best practices
  • Hands‑on experience with object‑oriented programming (Python preferred; Java, C#, VBA acceptable)
  • Advanced statistical knowledge including regression, hypothesis testing, probability distributions, A/B testing, and outlier analysis
  • Active learner mindset with the ability to adopt emerging analytical methods and technologies
  • Leadership mindset with experience mentoring and guiding developing talent

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent and typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience. Less years required if has relevant Master’s or Doctorate qualifications.

Preferable Skills & Experience

  • Experience with optimization solvers and toolkits such as CPLEX, Gurobi, XPressMP, or open‑source solvers (CBC, GLPK)
  • Knowledge of statistical programming tools (SAS, R, MATLAB)
  • Experience working with relational databases (SQL Server, Snowflake, Oracle)
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Databricks preferred)
  • Prior experience with enterprise ERP systems (SAP, JD Edwards preferred)
  • Understanding of data warehousing and ETL best practices
  • Strong analytical and process‑oriented thinking skills
  • Proficiency with Excel, financial modeling, and business reporting
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative, team‑oriented mindset

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$122,100 - $162,800
