Location: Richmond, VA, USA - 9954 Mayland Drive and/ or hybrid (must be able to work in the office 2-3 times/week)

Compensation: $147,800 – $246,300 + 25% bonus program + Benefits (health and wellness)/stock plan/401K and more!

The Opportunity:

The McKesson Medical-Surgical Total Rewards Team is seeking a Senior Director of Global Benefits and Retirement who will lead the strategic design, implementation, and governance of the organization’s health, welfare and retirement plans across four countries, ensuring they are competitive, compliant and aligned with our total rewards philosophy. This role will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including HR, Finance, and executive leadership, to design and deliver competitive and cost-effective plans that align with our overall business objectives.

Reporting to the Vice President of Total Rewards, this role will lead the design, governance, and financial optimization of health, welfare, and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, wellness, life, voluntary, disability, leaves/FMLA, and both qualified and non-qualified retirement plans. The role will oversee ongoing plan governance and vendor management, while developing strategy and design recommendations to maintain competitive positioning and positively impact employee wellbeing and financial security. This position will lead a team of several Benefits professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Separation & Future-State Benefits Strategy - Lead the strategic separation of health, welfare and retirement programs from McKesson, including the unwinding of shared plans, vendors, contracts, systems, and governance. Establish guiding principles to design, develop, and implement a standalone, compliant, and competitive benefits portfolio - including medical, ancillary, and retirement programs. Partner closely with HR, Legal, Finance, IT, Payroll, and external advisors to manage risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and deliver a seamless employee transition. Oversee future-state plan design, vendor selection, financial modeling, administration, governance, and employee communications, ensuring programs align with business strategy, culture, employee value proposition, and long-term financial sustainability.

  • Program Strategy and Management - Design, develop and implement cost efficient benefit programs and strategies that align with Medical-Surgical’ s business objectives, are competitive in the marketplace, and address employee needs; monitor external trends and opportunities for continuous evolvement of future health, welfare and programs.

  • Plan Compliance and Governance - Oversee the compliance, reporting, and governance of health, welfare and retirement plans in accordance with ERISA, DOL, and other regulatory agencies and with all internal controls & audit requirements. Monitor ongoing and developing legislation and public policy direction to ensure plan compliance with all laws and regulations in jurisdictions where McKesson Medical-Surgical operates. Partner with internal and external legal teams to ensure policies and procedures are compliant with current regulatory requirements; assist in preparation of plan reports and filings as required by government agencies, and update plan documents and amendments thereof. Assist with establishment of governance programs, committees and fiduciary oversight.

  • Vendor Selection and Management -- Lead vendor evaluation and selection process for all health, welfare and retirement programs; ensure vendor is held accountable for performance targets, service level agreements, and addresses delivery issues in a timely manner as they arise. Ensure benefits and leaves vendors deliver against SLAs and any escalations are managed quickly with high service standards, and that workflows across all third party and HR are operating optimally

  • Benefits Administration -Accountable for the contract and overall relationship of the benefit administrator; primary leadership point of contact for all benefits and leaves vendors in all in-scope jurisdictions; accountable for continuous improvement work by vendors to align with the organization’s strategic priorities.

  • Employee Communication and Education - Develop communication strategies to effectively educate and engage employees about the organization's benefit and retirement programs. Create and deliver informative materials, presentations, and training sessions to ensure employees understand the value, coverage, and proper utilization of their benefits.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience with 5+ years in a leadership capacity

Critical Skills:

  • Strategic and systematic C suite level experience with the capability to build and lead a team and successfully partner with varying levels of internal and external stakeholders

  • Persuasive leader with excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to articulate and influence strategy and gain alignment with key stakeholders, including C-suite level leadership

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and other benefit related platforms

  • Experience with design, implementation, and administration of a wide variety of both U.S. and international benefit health & welfare plans, ancillary benefits, and wellness plans

  • Subject matter expert with retirement programs, including 401(k), defined contribution and/or pension plans, and executive deferred compensation programs with a strong understanding of fiduciary governance, vendor management, and regulatory requirements

  • Prior M&A related Benefit integration/assimilation experience including HRIS implementation

  • Experience with identifying, selecting, and managing vendors, including the development of RFl's and RFP's and the ability to incorporate necessary technical requirements into contracts

  • Strong financial and quantitative skills with the ability to use data analysis to proactively derive insights and support fact-based decision making

  • Ability to build business cases and apply rigorous performance analytics, establish processes that analyze and measure the ongoing effectiveness of various benefit programs/initiatives, and course correct as needed

  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex issues and generate alternative solutions through rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis

  • Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize in a busy environment with changing and competing priorities

  • Robust project management and vendor management with desire to assist with day to day if required

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Advanced certification (CEBS, SHRM)

  • Understands and embraces current and future technology and has demonstrated experience delivering benefit programs and participant communications using various digital platforms

  • Strong working knowledge of IRS, DOL, ERISA, HIPM, ACA, COBRA, FMLA and various other regulations that impact benefit programs

Education:

  • Bachelor degree preferred

Work Environment & Travel

  • Hybrid or On-site position with some work performed from home. The person selected will need to be able to work in the office 2-3 times per week. If the candidate selected wishes to work from the Richmond office 100% of the time, this can also be accommodated

  • Position may require up to two trips per year for major business meetings or conferences.

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations.
