McKesson Medical-Surgical is seeking a Category Manager to join our team in Richmond, VA. As a Category Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the strategy and success of key product categories. This position is all about driving growth—both in revenue and margin—by developing and executing smart, data-driven strategies. You’ll take ownership of vendor and supplier relationships, using your insights to assess financial performance, product mix, and market opportunities. Your strategic thinking will guide long-term planning, and your ability to communicate effectively will help influence and align internal teams around your vision.

You’ll lead negotiations with suppliers to secure contract terms that support your category goals, while collaborating closely with cross-functional partners in private brand, marketing, sales, legal, pricing, and inventory management. This role involves deep analysis to uncover profit levers and identify opportunities for long-term category expansion. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, justify, and promote strategies and tactics for assigned product categories by performing comprehensive analysis determining competitive market factors, customer demand trends, industry issues and trends, GPO influence Private Label mix and new/potential technologies.
  • Identify and select key trading partners by assessing their capability to further business and sales objectives.
  • Responsible for supplier contracting process (Develop Requirements, Determine Strategies, Negotiations, Implementation, Managing ROI).
  • Work closely with Marketing & Sales leaders to understand unique needs and challenges, determine customer programs, and define specific solutions and programs with key suppliers.
  • Identify new product opportunities and work with Marketing to evaluate and introduce.
  • Develop and implement category strategy plans.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs, improve supply chain efficiencies, and facilitate cross-functional teams to accomplish objectives.

Minimum Requirements
Degree or equivalent and typically requires 4+ years relevant experience

Critical Skills

  • Previous experience in planning, cost reduction and contract negotiations
  • Negotiates successfully in a business relationship
  • Analyzes data, market, trends, and more   
  • Manages multiple projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management, and problem solving.
  • Translates strategic vision into tactical plans and influence adoption of prescribed actions

Additional Knowledge & Skills

  • Communicates effectively with large variety of audiences
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Excel- Pivots, VLOOKUP's and PowerPoint)
  • Medical/healthcare industry experience preferred
  • Strategic aptitude 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and written/verbal skills
  • Ability to collect and analyze data
  • Solid understanding of supply chain operations, inventory and financial profitability levers

Education

4-year degree in business, finance, marketing, or related field preferred

Physical Requirements
Large percent of time performing computer-based work is required

The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$83,500 - $139,100
