About the Role (Job Summary)

McKesson is seeking a highly skilled Sr. Manager, Transportation to lead the strategy, optimization, and daily execution of transportation operations supporting our national medical‑surgical supply chain. This role is responsible for ensuring timely, compliant, and cost‑effective delivery performance while driving innovation, strengthening carrier partnerships, and improving service levels across the network.

As a people‑focused leader, you will oversee a team of transportation professionals, manage inbound and outbound logistics operations, and implement scalable transportation solutions that enhance efficiency, reduce spend, and elevate customer experience. This position plays a critical role in shaping McKesson’s logistics strategy and supporting our mission to deliver better health outcomes.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Develop and execute transportation strategies that improve service quality, reduce cost, and enhance operational agility.
  • Lead and develop a high‑performing transportation team, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and career development.
  • Oversee carrier selection, contract negotiation, scorecarding, and performance management across all transportation modes (LTL, FTL, Parcel, Intermodal, Air, Ocean).
  • Oversee inbound and outbound transportation operations, resolving service issues, ensuring on‑time performance, and optimizing logistics flows.
  • Monitor transportation KPIs and leverage data analytics to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Deploy and optimize Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and other logistics tools to improve routing, scheduling, and visibility.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, hazmat requirements, and other federal/state transportation laws.
  • Partner cross‑functionally with Supply Chain, Operations, Procurement, Sales, and Warehousing to align transportation strategies with enterprise goals.
  • Develop, track, and manage transportation budgets, ensuring cost discipline and clear reporting of variances.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives, including process re‑engineering and implementation of new technologies or methodologies.
  • Manage relationships with third‑party logistics providers (3PLs), ensuring high quality and cost‑effective performance.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex transportation issues such as claims, exceptions, service failures, and customer escalations.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 9+ years of professional experience, including 1+ years of supervisory/management experience within transportation, logistics, or supply chain.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation operations, including multimodal networks (LTL, FTL, Parcel, etc.).
  • Experience working with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and related logistics technologies.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including team development and performance management.
  • Strong analytical and data‑driven decision‑making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence across levels.
  • Vendor management and negotiation experience with carriers or 3PL partners.
  • Proven track record reducing transportation costs and improving service in a complex network.

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree (MBA, Supply Chain, or related field).
  • 5+ years of leadership experience within transportation or supply chain management is highly preferred
  • Experience in healthcare, pharmaceutical, or highly regulated industries (FDA/DEA familiarity).
  • Knowledge of hazmat compliance, customs requirements, or international logistics.
  • Advanced Excel or analytics tools proficiency (Power BI, Tableau).
  • Experience leading large‑scale process improvement projects.

Travel / On‑Site & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel 10–20% for carrier visits, network support, or leadership meetings.
  • Standard office environment with some exposure to warehouse or transportation operations.
  • Must be able to carry and operate a laptop and related tools.

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. $80,600 - $134,300
